A daytime side trip from a stay at Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. November 19, 2024.
Savannah, GA was founded in 1733. In 1751, Savannah and the rest of Georgia became a Royal Colony, with Savannah as its capital; it was significant during the Revolutionary War. Later, during the Civil War, it one of the largest cities of the Confederacy. The river area, always important to the city, was revitalized in the 1970s and is a very walkable tourist district now (complete with “historic” staircases with warnings about using them). The old power plant by the river is now a JW Marriott; just outside its front door is the city’s first memorial dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoyed dinner at The Olde Pink House which claims that its oldest part was built in about 1771 — the house has been used as many things over the centuries (house, tavern, bank) and expanded. The current restaurant dates to the early 1990s. Our server said we were seated in the oldest part of the building that had once been the master bedroom. The food was pretty good too—especially the biscuits, but they wouldn’t share the recipe.
